How much does a small business website cost?

Website pricing varies widely, which can make it hard to compare like with like. Here is a general picture of how it tends to work in the UK.

Project builds

With a traditional project, you pay for the design and build as a one-off piece of work. As a broad UK market range, small business websites from freelancers and studios commonly fall somewhere between £1,500 and £6,000 – though what you get for that varies with the amount of content, the functionality involved, how much strategy and content support is included, and the design and development time behind it.

On top of the build, hosting is usually billed separately, and ongoing maintenance is either a retainer or charged as you need it.

Monthly services

Some providers spread the website build and ongoing support over a monthly service instead of charging a large project fee upfront. What is included varies considerably – hosting, maintenance, updates and support may or may not be part of the fee – so it is worth comparing the whole service rather than the monthly number alone.

What changes the price

Mostly the amount of website: how many pages, how much content, how many distinct things need designing and building. Functionality is the other big factor – bookings, portals and integrations add genuine work.

The biggest differences in price are usually the amount of website, functionality and support involved – not whether the finished site should be well designed.
